Victoria records 295 new cases overnight and loweset since 18th July.

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews has confirmed 295 new cases of coronavirus and 9 deaths in Victoria in the past 24 hours, the lowest day of case growth in the state since July 18. Although the drop in case numbers is good news, the level of community transmission is causing health authorities concern.

Seven of the nine deaths were linked to private sector aged care facilities. Fatalities include one person aged in their 60s, one in their 70s, five aged in their 80s and two people in their 90s.

About one in six active cases in Victoria are now linked to aged care homes, or 804 of the state's total 4,839 active cases.

Victoria’s chief health officer Brett Sutton said there were 55 additional community transmission cases flagged from the overnight numbers -that’s the same number as Monday’s record tally, and the same as yesterday.

While Victoria's drop in COVID-19 cases are a welcome relief today, Premier Daniel Andrews says he is not getting his hopes up just yet.

"I'm not reading into numbers each day too much," he said.

"I don't think that is necessarily the right thing to do. Obviously, it's always pleasing when there are less numbers than more but at the same time, trends are not made in one day. We need to see these numbers over a longer period."

Mr Andrews said infection numbers were still "way too high" to consider easing restrictions.
