Legendary Sri Lankan Singer Latha Walpola passes away at 92
Renowned Sri Lankan singer Latha Walpola passed away today (27) at the age of 92. She was receiving treatment at Sri Jayewardenepura Hospital at the time of her demise.
Born in Mount Lavinia in 1934, Walpola made her debut on Radio Ceylon in 1946, at just 12 years of age. Over a remarkable career spanning several decades, she recorded more than 10,000 songs, including performances in several foreign languages.
Revered as the eternal “Queen of Songs” in Sri Lankan cinema, she began her playback singing career in 1953 with the film Eda Ra. In the same year, she lent her voice to three films alongside Dharmadasa Walpola. Throughout her illustrious career, she contributed vocals to over 600 films, leaving an indelible mark on the nation’s musical and cinematic heritage.
Latha Walpola’s passing marks the end of an era in Sri Lankan arts and culture. Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the family in due course.
