Sri Lanka to introduce number portability facility for Mobile phones

Telecommunication Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRCSL) announced it has initiated preliminary measures to implement number portability in the country.

The TRCSL said the number portability facility enables consumers to switch to service providers of their choice without having to change their existing numbers.

“TRC initiates preliminary steps on implementing Number Portability which would enable consumers to select service providers without change of existing mobile numbers,” the official Twitter handline of TRCSL said.

Mobile number portability is a network function that allows mobile subscribers to switch service providers while retaining the mobile telephone number.

As per the current Sri Lankan telecom regime, the mobile telephone number belongs to the service provider.

The number portability facility already exists in most countries including Australia and countries in South Asian region including Malaysia. India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal
