Brisbane wins bid to host 2032 Olympic Games

Australia will once again host the Olympic Games with Brisbane winning the rights to the 2032 event. Brisbane will join Melbourne in 1956 and Sydney in 2000 as Australian host cities with the successful bid.

International Olympic Committee members have been wowed by Australia’s three tiered government financial guarantees - and the sunny skies - to feel confident to award the greatest sporting show on earth to the Queensland capital in 11 years time.

The 87 members of the IOC voting committee put their votes forward, with Brisbane needing 44 votes to win the bid and received 72 Valid Votes.  IOC president Thomas Bach announced the winner stating the magic words: “The Games of the XXXVth Olympiad are awarded to Brisbane, Australia."

The vote came after a colourful 20 minute final presentation to the members, led by prime minister Scott Morrison in a video link from Canberra and the Queensland premier Annastacia Palaszczuk who had flown to Tokyo especially for the bid.

While Brisbane was essentially the only contender still left in the hunt, after seeing off the lines of India’s Ahmedabad, Jakarta in Indonesia, Doha in Qatar, Rhine-Ruhr in Germany and Madrid in Spain, the Aussie city has long been the front runner.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison says the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Queensland will forge an enduring legacy for our entire nation.

“They will support economic growth and investment, deliver lasting community benefits and inspire the next generation of Australian athletes,” he said in the AOC’s press release, issued just now.

“I am proud of Australia, proud of Queensland and proud of our team that secured this win for our country.” He added

The Commonwealth Government has supported Brisbane’s candidacy for the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games right from the very start.
