Ceylon Workers Congress Leader & Minister Arumugam Thondaman passes away at aged 55

Minister of Community Empowerment and Estate Infrastructure Development Arumugam Thondaman has passed away on Tuesday (26) after admitted to Thalangama Hospital. An official at the Thalangama base hospital confirmed that Minister Thondaman died on the admission to hospital in critical condition.

He was the leader of the Ceylon Workers Congress the oldest of the unions in the estate sector.

According to reports he died at the age of 55 after suffering a heart attack.

Thondaman, an ally of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa had returned from meeting India’s new High Commissioner to Sri Lanka, Gopal Bagley shortly before. The two discussed bilateral cooperation for community development including the ongoing Indian Housing Project for estate workers.

He was to contest the upcoming Parliamentary General elections as an ally of the ruling Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna from the Nuwera Eliya District.

He was the grandson of the great Savumiamoorthy Thondaman, the man who unionized the Estate workers of Sri Lanka and played kingmaker in many a governments.
