Perth in lockdown as Delta variant confirmed in new community case
West Australian Premier Mark McGowan has plunged Perth and Peel into a full lockdown for at least four days.
Perth and Peel will enter a minimum 4-day lockdown from 12.01am, Tuesday 29 June 2021 until 12.01am, Saturday 3 July, 2021.
You are required to stay home unless you need to:
- work because it's not possible to work from home. Refer to the list of essential workers
- shop for essentials like groceries, medicine and necessary supplies, including click and collect, within 5km from your home or closest practicable location
- attend to medical or health care needs including emergencies, compassionate requirements and looking after the vulnerable;
- exercise with a maximum of two adults from the same household (children under 18 years are not counted), limited to one hour per day within a 5km radius from home, and masks must be worn, except for vigorous exercise.
- receive a COVID-19 vaccine, or
- leave due to an emergency (e.g. emergencies, fleeing domestic violence).
Western Australian premier Mark McGowan made the announcement late on Monday, after a man in his 30s tested positive after what appeared to be “fleeting contact” with a confirmed case at the Indian Ocean Brewery where he worked.
On Monday night he said the current COVID-19 outbreak had grown to three cases and was a rapidly evolving situation requiring action to be taken to protect the community. He had earlier warned delaying action was dangerous.
Earlier on Monday, a 32-year old woman who attended the Mobius health and performance gym in Joondalup, tested positive.
McGowan said genomic testing had confirmed that the original case who visited from Sydney had the Delta variant.
“We need to take this very seriously,” McGowan said. “We know the risk Covid presents and we know from around the world that the Delta strain is another new beast that we can’t take any chances with. It is debilitating and it can be deadly.”
Perth is the Third Australian city to go into lockdown as an outbreak that began in Sydney spreads across the country.
