ETA mandatory for all foreign nationals visiting Sri Lanka

With effect from 15 October 2025, it will be mandatory for all foreign nationals visiting Sri Lanka for tourism purposes to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) prior to their arrival in Sri Lanka. The government anticipates that the changes under the ETA system will boost tourism.

This mandatory pre-arrival procedure applies even to those eligible for visa-free entry, signalling a significant change in the nation’s border control and visitor management policy.

Authorities state that the move is aimed at streamlining the entry process, enhancing national security, and ensuring better tracking of inbound tourists.

The announcement was officially released through Sri Lanka’s overseas missions in Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Indonesia, and France.
